The Beard Brotherhood isn't just a catchy title, we are real-life group of men with a real-life cause!St. Baldrick's is a volunteer-driven charity that raises money for children's cancer research, and their great organization is our tool for this silly beard endeavor. There's nothing heroic about growing a beard, no effort, no loss, no sacrifice -- but that's where you come in! It's fun, we'll look different, but it's getting lots of pledges from people like you that will make the difference. These kids don't have the option of growing their hair out, and might not live long enough to see their first beards.
--Who are you? Why beards? What does the blog have to do with it?--
Our company, Bally Technologies, supports Saint Baldrick's every year, and is pretty proud of the amount of money we can raise ($10,421.00 in 2011!). But, you know, there was an untapped demographic in these halls -- a lot of hair being shaved off EVERY DAY that was driving NO pledges. It's a two sided problem, not only was there no money being raised for all of this shaving, there was a serious lack of beards. A lot of these guys are 25-55 years old and have never worn a beard in their life!
These men are banding together and breaking down some social conventions they've been raised with, or maybe some confidence issues, and that alone is pretty inspiring to me. That's what these blog posts are about, they're just archived e-mails I send out to the participants for advice and encouragement, and it's all in good fun. It's a great excuse for a lot of guys to do something they've never done before by doing some real good in the world. There's 28 or so of us in the Bally Beard Brotherhood, so hopefully it will make a big impact on our fundraising totals!

But while we're goofing off, there really IS an end-game here, one that I hope you'll help us with. We started growing November 1st, and the shaving event is March 16. We'll go on stage with hundreds of other participants, and get our beards and heads shaved.
Do you know any of these guys? They're going to be awfully attached to these beautiful beards, but if they hit their pledge amount sadly it's going to have to go, and you can laugh at the poor plucked goose of a man that will be left. Or how about this -- are you sick of that damned beard?? Well, fork out the money and make it go away! Think of that however you like.
